I was talking to a friend recently and we started discussing “empty nest syndrome”. This is not a clinical term but it is when a person gets depressed because their kids have left the nest. This is typical of parents who feel that they are defined by parenthood. I do not see this as an issue that Lee and I are going to have. Sure, we love our kids but they can leave the house and we are more than happy to move into a new phase of life.
Whether it is a Senior Communities in Florida, an RV through the U.S, or a rocker on the porch, human beings go through developmental stages throughout their lives. Some folks believe that people do not change. That is totally wrong. The fact is that people change throughout their lives and if they do not then it is very unhealthy. Change is natural. It is important to understand that your children are going to grow up. This is not just the kid’s development but yours.
Just like a retirement fund where money is invested while we are young, we need to invest time into embracing change. Look at your future and where you want to be. Do you want to move? Are you going to change the kid’s room into a gym or art studio? Are you going to sell all of your worldly possessions and backpack through India? Thinking about these dreams and hopes now will make it a positive thing when it finally happens.
